Despite all the respect that you feel for the man responsible for bringing you masterpieces such as The Lost Symbol and The Da Vinci Code, the latest book from him features a lot of coincidences (slightly unnatural but interesting enough to continue reading). It’s slightly difficult to believe Robert Langdon would fly to Washington DC on a private jet quickly without talking (confirming) with the man who invited him. There are instances in the book where fathers do not recognize their sons. Dan Brown’s characters talk to each other in complicated paragraphs, not like usual conversations that we (real people) have with each other. The hero of the book has a bad memory, which suddenly, turns good in one scene … unexplained.

A Different Kind of a Writer

Let’s accept one fact – Dan Brown is a different kind of a writer who doesn’t care about creating realistic conversations or scenes or even characters. But then, even his readers don’t care. The reason is, he is too good at something which he is good at (hopefully, this sentence is clear enough). He is more like a natural puzzle creator who expertly accompanies you as you walk through it with him. He is expert at getting through to suppressed history and then mixing fiction with it, and then questions the conventional wisdom with his smartly crafted queries.

Dan Brown’s World Is a Different One Altogether

Dan Brown manages to see things even where others have failed to. He asks the question – what if … the Masonic symbols present in the capital of US all contain some hidden meaning. He believes all the secrets can be easily unlocked with the proper keys. Dan Brown lives in a different world, and lives there successfully. The Lost Symbol will probably not succeed as much as The Da Vinci Code, simply because Jesus evokes far more emotion than the masons do. So freemasonry will not become part of the daily conversations as did the first book of Dan Brown.

Dan Brown Is Most Excited About

The author, however, believes his usual hero; Robert Langdon will serve him well in this book also. The formula also remains the same, and the villain (a different one) this time also remains as merciless as ever. The villain, named Mal’ akh, doesn’t kill when he gets the opportunity (extend the logic). Reading the book The Lost Symbol is more like solving a crossword puzzle, but this may be the most fascinating thing you may ever have done in your life. Could you believe what Dan Brown is most excited about (not about ancient secrets), rather it is the soft drink recipe he is more interested in.

Question by Nathan: Crossword Puzzle Difficulty – NY Times vs ?
I am a casual crossword puzzle solver. When I read/hear about the NY Times crossword there seems to be this aura of prestige or something that goes along with it like it is the major league of crosswords. My question is how does the NY times crossword compare in difficulty to other major newspapers like the Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Cleveland Plain Dealer, LA Times etc.

An additionally question, where do city newspapers get their crosswords? How many of them are unique to just that paper every day? I’m sure some must be syndicated or published nationally, especially in smaller papers or else there’d be like 1000 new crosswords a day in papers.

The difficulty of the New York Times crossword puzzle varies depending on the day of the week.

Monday’s puzzle is the easiest; Tuesday’s is a little harder, and Saturday’s is really very hard.

The puzzle is devised by the New York Times’ crossword editor. Right now, that position is held by Will Shortz. It’s really quite a good and prestigious job; many of us wish we were in Shortz’s shoes.

There are computer programs that can create kind of crappy crosswords. But composing a really good crossword puzzle takes a great amount of skill, creativity, thought and time. So coming up with a good daily crossword is, basically, a full-time job. Very few newspapers can afford to employ someone whose sole duty is to construct crossword puzzles.

Most newspapers, especially with midsize distributions, don’t have their own crossword editor. They pay a subscription fee for the right to run a syndicated puzzle. This means that the same puzzle might run in The Baltimore Sun, The Salt Lake Tribune, and The Des Moines Register.

Another famous crossword puzzle is The Times (of London) crossword. This one is called “cryptic” because the clues follow a strange set of rules that most of us–including me–don’t understand. (An example given by David Sedaris was the clue: “Turns heads, in a way.” And the solution is “wower.” So, um, good luck with that one.)
