Popular Childrenâs Publication About Pests Available in Spanish
University Park, PA (PRWEB) February 18, 2006
Now Spanish-speaking children can learn about insects, weeds and other potential pests with a free copy of the Pennsylvania IPM Programâs Spanish version of the Join Our Pest Patrol publication — Unete a Nuestra Patrulla contra las Plaga.
The publication is a fun, educational resource for Pennsylvania teachers of students in grades 3-4. Like the English version, the workbook is designed to serve two audiences: elementary school students who must learn about IPM to meet the new Academic Standards in environment and ecology, section 4.5.4, âIntegrated Pest Management,â and kids in 4-H programs.
Integrated pest management, or IPM, is a kid-safe, economical and scientific approach to managing pests. IPM integrates knowledge of pest identity and biology with pest monitoring so that action, if needed, can be taken at just the right time. In addition, IPM uses a combination of management tactics that are more likely to be safe and effective.
Spanish speaking students will learn whether a pictured insect is a âpest or guest,â find out about weeds such as dandelions and purple loosestrife, and learn pesticide safety through fun and educational activities such as crossword puzzles, fill in the blanks, mazes and picture drawing.
Also available in English is the accompanying âJoin Our Pest Patrol Teacherâs Guideâ that includes facts, investigations, activities and resources to support childrenâs curiosity and extended learning. Concepts include distinguishing weed and insect pests from beneficial plants and insects, understanding why humans want to manage pests, recognizing common pests in our homes, gardens, and neighborhoods, choosing the least toxic ways to manage pests and safeguarding against pesticide risks. The guide will help teachers better explain IPM to kids.
Copies of the Spanish Join Our Pest Patrol publication can be downloaded as a printable PDF file from the PA IPM Programâs web site at http://paipm.cas.psu.edu/pestpatrol.html. The English version of the publication and Teacherâs Guide can also be downloaded from the same web site. In addition, a free hard copy of the Spanish publication can be obtained by contacting Penn Stateâs Department of Entomology, 501 ASI Building, University Park, PA 16802, phone 814-865-1895. Additional copies can be purchased for $ 2 per copy up to 30, and $ 1.50 per copy for quantities over 30, plus shipping and handling. To obtain hard copies of the English version, contact Cheryl Watts at the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
